A 2018 study published in Marine Drugs found that a fucoxanthin-containing cream reduced UVB-induced erythema in hairless mice by down-regulating COX-2 and iNOS while up-regulating HO-1 through the Nrf-2 pathway. The same research showed fucoxanthin reduced inflammatory cytokines such as TNF-α and IL-6 in skin cells.

Anti-photoaging effects. Fucoxanthin has been shown to reduce wrinkle formation and epidermal hypertrophy in mice, suppress melanogenesis, and support restoration of the skin barrier after UVA-induced sunburn.

Topical or Oral?

Both delivery routes are being explored. Topically, fucoxanthin can be formulated into creams, and permeation studies show that a cream base is a favorable vehicle for helping it cross the skin barrier. Orally, fucoxanthin is absorbed in the gut as fucoxanthinol and distributed through the body, where it may provide systemic antioxidant support.
