Horny Goat Weed: Potent Healthy Aging Herb
The herb with the comical name, “Horny Goat Weed” (also known as epimedium) enjoyed heightened popularity at the turn of this century, and for good reason.
Supporting Bone Health
There has been a strong interest in searching for natural modalities to support bone health. Genistein, an isoflavone abundant in soy, and icariin, a prenylated flavonol glycoside isolated from Epimedium, have both been identified to exert beneficial effects in supporting against post-menopausal bone loss. One in vitro study compared the ability of genistein and icariin in enhancing differentiation and mineralization of osteoblasts. The researchers found that icariin has a stronger osteogenic activity than genistein, although future in vivo studies are required to investigate whether icariin is more efficient in improving bone mass and/or preventing bone loss. (Ma, 2011)
Another way horny goat week protects bones is through stimulating production of a protein called bone morphogenetic protein, which helps form healthy bones and cartilage.

Brain/Cognitive Support
And, according to Puya Yazdi MD, in his article for SelfDecode, supplementing with horny goat week may have neuroprotective effects because it can cross the blood-brain barrier. It also has been shown to support brain health by improving blood flow in the brain, and support brain blood vessel integrity. These actions help improve or sustain cognitive acuity as well as memory.
Immune Support
Dr. Yazdi noted that studies have shown horny goat weed supplementation may also support immune health by addressing inflammation and acting as an antioxidant.
Horny goat week reduces production of pro-inflammatory compounds cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), interleukin-b (IL-B) and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) as well as the master inflammation switch, nuclear factor- kappa B (NF-kB).
Additionally, it increases amounts of superoxide dismutase (SOD), a powerful antioxidant enzyme that reduces oxidative damage to cells.
Age Support
The flavonoids contained in the Epimedium extracts reset the age related metabolites to a younger level such as saturated fatty acids, unsaturated fatty acids and amino acids[1]. Hence it can be used as an effect anti-ageing dietary supplement.

Areas of Research
However, did you know that this herb has other beneficial actions in the body as shown by research? According to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, researchers have and continue to investigate the role of Epimedium. Studies have looked at its anti-cancer effects, anti-HIV activity, atherosclerosis and post-menopausal bone support.

(Note: although researchers are encouraged to investigate natural products in disease states – industry is not allowed to reference those states, in this case, cancer and HIV. This is presented as information only.)
