The highest concentrations of CoQ10 are found in organs with the greatest energy demands, such as the heart and brain.

As the human body ages CoQ10 production slows. Additionally, when disease is present, or the individual is consuming statins, CoQ10 production is even lower. Periods of high stress or chronic stress, vitamin B-6 deficiency, and oxidative stress are factors known to further deplete CoQ10 production in the body.

This antioxidant can be obtained through diet, as it is naturally occurring in nuts, fish and meat, but one would have to eat quite a lot of these daily to obtain

According to the Mayo Clinic, sufficient scientific evidence shows that CoQ10 supplementation provides several key benefits.

CoQ10 has been shown to potentially help reduce blood pressure and protect the cardiovascular structure – heart conditions can increase oxidative damage and inflammation in the circulatory system leading to and from the heart. Two placebo-controlled studies have shown that subjects with cardiovascular diseases consumed CoQ10 for one and two years had reduced risk of mortality as well as fewer hospitalizations.

The Mayo Clinic noted that some research suggests that CoQ10 supplementation may help reduce both total and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol levels in people with diabetes, thereby reducing their risk of heart disease.

Because of its high fat content (up to 60%, with an abundance of DHA), the brain is vulnerable to oxidative damage, and can benefit from antioxidant supplementation. And mitochondria in brain cells function to produce high energy the brain needs to perform optimally.

According to Life Extension magazine, “CoQ10 is essential not only in preventing brain structural deterioration, but in maintaining normal function at all ages. Studies are revealing some startling associations in two areas of brain function in particular: migraine headaches and common mental health problems such as depression and schizophrenia.” *

Skin, too, can be imperiled by free radicals, especially from the environment and by poor diet and lack of sufficient hydration.
