Cranberries are red hot!
They’re the way to go!
Packed with natural dietary supplements like vitamin C and iron, and also with flavor, it’s no wonder cranberries play a healthy role in the food chain. Cranberries are popular for juicing, but they can be used to make delicious, and super healthy, sauces, jellies, and jams. And better yet, cranberres are especially healthy for women! Some studies show that cranberries may have beneficial effects on the urinary tract and some have even called the cranberry “the woman health patron saint”!
This is why Cactus Botanics carries top of the line cranberry powder extract. Our cranberry powder comes from North America Vaccinium macrocarpon. The most active ingredient in cranberries is proanthocyanidin which are a class of polyphenols. Chemically, they are oligomeric flavonoids, which are the most effective natural antioxidant to remove free radicals in the human body.
There are three major test methods of Proanthocyanidins in Cran-
berry Powder Extract——EP5.0 method, EP8.0 method and
BL-DMAC method.
The first method is the EP5.0 method which is the most general analytical procedure and widely used for cranberry PACs. The PACs are quantified by measuring their absorbance at 545 nm.
Calculation Formula:
Total PACs= (A × 500)/(75 × m )
i.e. taking the specific absorbance of cyanidin chloride to be 75.
A = absorbance at 545 nm;
m = mass of the substance to be
examined, in grams.
The second way is the EP8.0 method which is more strict than EP5.0 method. The result of using EP8.0 method is one-sixteenth than that using EP5.0 method.
However, a lack of appropriate standards and interference from
other sample components, such as
anthocyanins and extraction solvents,
can lead to over-or underestimation of
PACs.
In this respect, BL-DMAC is a colorimetric method that appears to be more accurate than other methods and has been successfully used to quantify cranberry PACs. That’s way this kind of cranberry PE is more expensive than one using EP5.0 Method.
Calculation Formula:
Total PACs= (C × D × V)/(1000 × S)
where the total PACs are in mg g−1
C = the concentration of PACs in a sample extract, in g L−1
D = the dilution factor
V = the extraction volume, in milliliters
S = the sample size, in grams.
