lthough it grows heartily on land, the Sea Buckthorn berry offers antioxidant power and health-benefits found in some popular oceanic plants and creatures such as krill.

The vermilion-colored berry is resplendently abundant in vitamin C -- as much a range of 114 to 1550 mg per 100 grams with an average content of 695 mg per 100 grams, which is about 15 times greater than that of oranges (typically 45 mg per 100 grams). Therefore, sea buckthorn is an outstanding source of this antioxidant vitamin. The berry also contains great amounts of carotenoids, vitamin E, amino acids, minerals, beta-sitosterol and polyphenols. Of the seven flavonols found in Sea Buckthorn, isorhamnetin 3-O-glycosides were the most abundant.

Health researcher Lindsay Wilson, writes on Health Online, September 21, "The fatty acid content found in sea buckthorn is especially unusual – the oil derived from the pulp and the seed has a complete and balanced blend of all of the important essential fatty acids, omega-3, 6, 7, and 9. Rarely found in the plant world and a natural component of our skin, omega-7 plays an important role in protecting and replenishing the skin while helping to maintain the integrity of the skin’s cellular membranes. Omega-7 also promotes the health of the mucous membranes that line the gastrointestinal tract and the upper respiratory tract." Wilson adds that Sea buckthorn possesses not only antioxidant ability but anti-inflammatory, and anti-microbial properties all which favorably impact health.

any cosmetic and cosmeceutical manufacturers are incorporating sea buckthorn oil to their products for youthful, healthy and vibrant skin. Often, these products are geared for "anti-aging" and "skin rejuvenation", as well as for accelerating skin healing. For consumers who have specific skin issues, sea buckthorn is an ingredient for products that address rosacea, acne and eczema. Further, the summer sun-care product arena is ripe for sea buckthorn as it may promote sunburn healing and soothing, thanks to its content of beta-carotene.

ea buckthorn's flavonoid content, according to researcher Wilson, "helps maintain the muscle tissue of the heart, helping to promote strength and function while its lipid content helps maintain healthy cholesterol levels and promotes the health of the arteries, veins, and blood vessels."

According to Subhuti Dharmananda, Ph.D., Director, Institute for Traditional Medicine, Portland, OR, "In a double-blind clinical trial conducted in China, 128 patients with ischemic heart disease were given total flavonoids of sea buckthorn at 10 mg three times daily for 6 weeks. The patients had a decrease in cholesterol level and improved

cardiac function; also they had less angina than those receiving the control ingredient. The mechanism of action may include reduced stress of cardiac muscle tissue by regulation of inflammatory mediators . In a laboratory animal study, the flavonoids of sea buckthorn were shown to reduce the production of pathogenic thromboses."
