The Mighty Power of Cranberry

Cranberry is, without a doubt, the original “superberry.” It has a long, rich history of traditional use for bladder support and healthy urinary function. Cranberry has a naturally somewhat intense tart flavor but is enjoyed in dried form, used for baked products and salad toppers, as well as the quintessential US’ Thanksgiving side dish.

What is Cranberry extract?

The North American cranberry (Vaccinium Maro-carpon) contains proanthocyanidins, a rare constituent in fruit and vegetables and other ingredients, which can reduce the probability of human-acquired infections. It can improve atherosclerosis, restore elasticity, and prevent cardiovascular disease. Cranberry is rich in vitamin C, iron, antioxidants, proanthocyanidins, which can prevent cell damage and maintain the health and vitality of cells, leaving the skin soft and rosy.

• Inhibition of herpes simplex

Herpes simplex virus (HSV) infection is lifelong and its spectrum of clinical manifestations is wide, ranging from asymptomatic infection or mild mucocutaneous lesions on the lips, cornea, genitals, or skin, up to more severe, and even life-threatening, infections. Natural products continue to provide abundant and successful source of new antimicrobial substances. Among them, products extracted from the fruit of American cranberry (Vaccinium macrocarpon), in different formulations, are rich in compounds that have been implicated to exert numerous health benefits, like the prevention of microbial infections and beneficial activity against inflammation.

• Preventive treatment in Alzheimer’s disease

Cranberry extract (CBE) rich polyphenols are potent to delay paralysis induced by alleviating β-amyloid toxicity in Caenorhabditis elegans model of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Cranberry and its products have been used extensively as nutraceuticals owing largely to their anti-microbial, anti-mutagenic, anti-angiogenic, and anti-oxidant properties. Besides, CBE applied as a preventive agent in AD treatment, rather than a therapeutic medicine, was more effective.

• Prevention of obesity and related complications: Metabolic syndrome and diabetes

In recent years, obesity, metabolic syndrome and diabetes are becoming epidemic both in developed and developing countries. Cranberry ameliorates insulin resistance, plasma lipid profile, dyslipidemia, hyperglycaemia and oxidative stress in individuals with the metabolic syndrome; decreases diet-induced weight gain and visceral obesity; diminishes blood markers of oxidative stress. Thus, cranberry could be an effective and safe component of functional foods addressed for individuals with metabolic complications.

Contribution to more youthful appearance

The unique composition of the cranberry endows the extract with very valuable properties: it is rich in vitamin C and antioxidants and it stimulates the natural rejuvenation processes of the skin.
