Recommended Dosage:
Recommended Dosage:250-500mg/day of a standardized leaf extract containing 50 to 99% polyphenols, standardized on EGCg content as the primary marker compound. Caffeine-free extracts are available. Tea: 4 to 10 cups /day of a green tea beverage (4 to 7 grams of loose green tea).
Key Active Constituents:
Flavonoid derivatives: (-)-epicatechin (EC), (-)-epigallocatechin (EGC), 9-)-epicatechin gallate 9ECg), and (-)-epigallocatechin gallate (EGC g) are the major catechins present.
Side Effects:None identified associated with consumption of up to 20 cups/day. Excessive consumption of caffeine is known to cause typical effects, such as nervousness, insomnia, and restlessness in some individuals.
Drug Interactions:
EGCg displays anticoagulant activity due to inhibition of platelet aggregation, so individuals taking aspirin or other anticoagulant substances on a daily basis should consult with their physician. Green tea has shown synergistic antitumor activity with tamoxifen, suldinac and doxorubicin..
Special Precautions EGCg may provoke an allergic reaction in some; animal studies have also shown an anti-allergic action for this constituent. Patients on potassium-restricted diets should avoid excessive consumption of green tea, which is high in this nutrient.
