American ginseng (Panax Quinquefolius Linn) is an herbaceous perennial plant in the ivy family, commonly used in traditional and modern Chinese herbal medicine.

Although this plant is native to eastern North America, it is also abundantly cultivated in China, where it is often called huaqishen or xiyangshen.

Ginseng means "essence of the earth in the form of a man." In fact, the root does resemble a human body.

American ginseng has a gnarly, tan-colored root which is the part of the plant most used. American ginseng is of the species panax which means "all illness." American ginseng has been used to cure illnesses of all kinds for thousands of years.

What are its main active ingredients?

American ginseng contains dammarane-type ginsenosides, or saponins, as the major biologically active constituents. Dammarane-type ginsenosides include two classifications: 20(S)-protopanaxadiol (PPD) and 20(S)-protopanaxatriol (PPT). American ginseng contains high levels of Rb1, Rd (PPD classification), and Re (PPT classification) ginsenosides—higher than that of Panax ginseng in one study.
