Myricetin is a flavonoid that is commonly found in natural food sources such as berries, vegetables, teas, wine and herbs.

Myricetin is considered to be an antioxidant, which means that it is capable of eliminating cancer causing free radicals within the body.

It is usually taken from the bark, leaves, and roots of the plant known as myrica cerifera, and is completely water soluble, which means it makes an excellent source for teas.

Myricetin is commonly marketed as an ingredient in products to help consumers stop smoking. It is believed that Myricetin blocks certain enzymes within the body. Myricetin is also considered to be an antioxidant, ridding the body of cancer causing free radicals.

Historical use of this falvonoid include treatments for diarrhea, dysentery and as a treatment for fevers. It is also believed that myricetin may also be able to lower high cholesterol levels, as well as reduce the risk of prostate cancer in men. It may very well be the antioxidant properties of myricetin that is responsible for reducing the risk of prostate cancer.

There appear to be no adverse side effects or drug interactions related to supplemental use of myricetin, however it is generally recommended that women who are pregnant or nursing should consult their physician before implementing myricetin into their daily regimen.

As always, however, it is wise for anyone with special conditions or taking other prescribed medications to consult their physicians before adding myricetin supplements to their daily regimens.

Consumers who are interested in the health benefits of myricetin should take the time to read the labels and ingredient lists of products in order to insure they are getting a quality supplement. One of the things to look for is additives, or fillers, that manufacturers may add to increase the weight of the product, but that do nothing to increase nutritional value. Common additives and fillers include silica, otherwise known as sand; flours, and sugars.

Myricetin supplements are available in caplet form. It is usually recommended to be taken with plenty of water, as myricetin is 100% water soluble. Myricetin should be maintained in a cool place.
